More Than a Match: Police Legacy Game Brings Rugby and Community Together

The Police Vikings Rugby Club and Vic Masters Rugby are proud to team up once again for one of the most meaningful fixtures of the year — the Police Legacy Game.

This annual event has become a cornerstone in the Vic Masters calendar, and this year, it carries even greater significance as we raise funds and awareness for two vital organisations: Police Legacy Victoria and the Type 1 Foundation.

We caught up with both Jarrod Newell, President of Vic Masters Rugby, and Mark Archibald, President of the Police Vikings, to reflect on what this game represents — and why it continues to grow in importance.

Rugby with Purpose

For Vic Masters President Jarrod Newell, the event is about much more than just a game.

“The Police Legacy Game has become a cornerstone event for Vic Masters Rugby — one that goes far beyond the scoreboard,” says Jarrod.

“At its heart, Masters rugby is about friendship, connection, and inclusivity. These are the same values we see in the service and sacrifice of Victoria Police.”

“Through the shared love of rugby, we’re reminded that behind the uniform are everyday people — teammates, mates, and members of the community. This game helps bridge the gap and bring people together through sport.”

For the Police Vikings, the motivation to take part each year is clear.

“It’s the chance to engage with the Masters community and fundraise for causes that support our members’ families,” says Mark Archibald.

Playing for Something Bigger

Vic Masters has always taken pride in backing causes that matter, and this year is no different.

“Supporting Police Legacy is especially meaningful for us,” Jarrod explains. “The organisation provides crucial support for the families of fallen officers and former members adjusting to life after service. This is our way of saying: we see you, we appreciate you, and we’ve got your back.”

“The Type 1 Foundation is also close to our hearts. One of our own — both a Vic Masters player and a serving police officer — has a child living with Type 1 Diabetes. So for us, this support is personal.”

Mark echoes this sentiment from the police side:

“Police Legacy has always been the primary group we fundraise for, because they’re always there supporting the families of our fallen members. This is our opportunity to support them.

“We chose the Type 1 Foundation this year because I — and many other friends in the job — have children with Type 1. This organisation educates and raises awareness, connects families with Type 1 kids, and runs events so they can have fun in a safe space with others who truly understand what they’re going through.”

Strengthening the Bond

When asked what this match means for strengthening the connection between the police and the wider public, Mark puts it simply:

“It shows the community that we are part of it — and that we’re here to help.”

That message of mateship and unity is what drives both clubs to continue making this fixture an annual highlight.

A Game for Everyone

Jarrod sums up what the day is all about:

“Whether you’re a copper, a tradie, a CEO, or someone who hasn’t played since under 12s, there’s a spot for you on the field… and a cold drink waiting after the game.

“This event is a reminder that rugby doesn’t care about your job title, gender, or waistline — it just asks if you’re willing to have a go, support your mates, and share a laugh (or a limp) afterwards.”

Join Us

Mark's message to the community is simple but powerful:

“Get on board. Come down to Southern Districts, register and play, throw some money in the rattle tin, and grab some Type 1 merch.”

Whether you're strapping on the boots or cheering from the sidelines, your presence helps raise awareness and funds for two incredible causes — and brings people together in the spirit of fun, footy, and community.

Because at the end of the day, it’s not just about rugby. It’s about compassion, connection, and backing those who have our backs every day.
